Earthquake Simulator
The exhibit delves into topics such as extreme natural phenomena, natural disasters, and the destructive forces of nature. It offers visitors an immersive experience of the power of earthquakes and what different magnitudes truly entail. By simulating the sensations of being caught in an earthquake, the exhibit fosters a deeper understanding of the event's impact.
Positioned as a visual link between the Food and Nature/Environment zones, the exhibit consists of a square platform (approximately 5m²) with two walls and a ceiling elevated above the exhibition floor. Motors installed underneath the platform induce shaking, replicating the effects of a magnitude 3 earthquake. A short ramp provides wheelchair accessibility, while a 1m-high fence surrounds the platform. Within the platform, a small rounded table with cutlery and a lamp, accompanied by a light bulb, enhance the simulation. Visitors initiate the simulation by pressing the "Start" button, triggering vigorous shaking of the lamp, mirror, and cutlery. The platform's movements are controlled by powerful electric motors, ensuring safety and replicating authentic earthquake sensations. Visitors have the option to stop the simulation using the "Stop" buttons located on the table and exhibition floor.
